Latest Development
  • Partly supported by strong investment growth, China's economy grew by 7.6% in the first three quarters of 2001 and is estimated to grow by 7.3% for the whole year.
  • China officially became a WTO member on 11 December 2001. The tariff rates of 5,332 items, out of a total of 7,316 product items, were reduced at various degrees in January 2002.
  • Macroeconomic targets for the 10th Five-Year Plan (2001-2005) are set. These include 7% annual GDP growth, 5% annual growth in income and below 5% urban unemployment rate.
  • Detailed Implementation rule of the Law of Sino-Foreign Equity Joint Ventures was formally promulgated in July 2001.
  • China allows foreign-invested manufacturing companies to export any non-monopolised products not under quota or license management, including those not produced by the company.
